Licences

Open-source licences

PDFMagpie stands on excellent open-source work. These are the components that run in your browser, with their licences and the notices they ask for.

The PDF engine

Redact PDF, Remove metadata, Repair PDF, PDF to text, Annotate PDF, Flatten PDF, Crop PDF, Edit properties, Extract images, Create a form, Compare PDFs and the newest encryption path read, rewrite and write PDF files with an engine written in Rust and compiled by us to WebAssembly, which runs in a single browser thread with no shared memory. It is built from a modified selection of the PdfCraft crates by the ArtCraft team. The crates are dual-licensed under the MIT License and the Apache License, Version 2.0 (MIT OR Apache-2.0); PDFMagpie uses them under the Apache License, Version 2.0.

Pinned revision: https://github.com/storytold/pdfcraft, commit 20eebc1c33ff7e6f42ac1c56bf95192f628a9d97. The build depends on that exact commit, so upstream changes cannot alter it without review. Our own wrapper crate (the WebAssembly bindings, option parsing and the reports each tool shows) calls the upstream crates; the patched copies of third-party crates described below come from the same pinned commit.

The upstream repository ships its licence texts and a notice file. The notice excludes the ArtCraft and PdfCraft names, wordmarks and logos from the licence grant, which is why those names appear on this site only in this notice. PDFMagpie is not affiliated with or endorsed by the upstream project or its authors. The same information is kept in THIRD_PARTY_LICENSES.md in our repository.

The page renderer

Previews of finished files are drawn by the hayro PDF renderer, written in Rust by Laurenz Stampfl and the Hayro Authors and licensed under Apache-2.0 OR MIT. We use it under the Apache License, Version 2.0. The upstream engine carries patched copies of the hayro crates, of the lopdf PDF parsing crate (MIT) and of the vello_common graphics crate under its vendor directory; our build takes those patched copies from the same pinned commit, and they keep their own licences and copyright notices, listed here as they appear in those copies.

The remaining crates in the dependency tree are build-time or utility crates under permissive licences. The code that turns your boxes, notes and settings into engine calls, and the interfaces around it, are PDFMagpie’s own.

Fonts and data inside the engine

A few small resources are compiled into the WebAssembly file. Their licences ask for these notices to be reproduced. A colour profile used for rendering (CGATS001Compat-v2-micro.icc) is released into the public domain under CC0 1.0 and needs no notice; we mention it as a courtesy.

Each library keeps its own copyright notice in the code we ship. Where a licence asks for a notice to be shown to users, this page is that notice.

What we do not use

No GPL or AGPL PDF components are used: no Ghostscript, no MuPDF. Nothing is loaded from a content delivery network, and no component sends your files anywhere. You can check that yourself.
