How to merge PDF files in the order you want

Merging turns a pile of separate PDFs into one document that is easier to email, upload or print: a cover letter and CV for a job portal that takes a single attachment, twelve monthly statements for a mortgage application, or receipts for an expenses claim. Each file appears as a card showing its first page and page count, so you can check you have the right documents before you join them.

  1. 1

    Add your PDFs

Choose files or drop them onto the panel. Use Add more PDFs to bring in extras at any point.

  2. 2

    Put them in order

Drag the cards, use the arrow buttons, or sort A–Z or Z–A by file name.

  3. 3

    Merge and download

Press Merge PDF. Rename the file first if you like.

Merge PDF features

  • Combine as many PDFs as your device can hold, with no fixed file or page cap
  • Reorder by drag and drop, arrow buttons or A–Z / Z–A name sort
  • First-page preview and page count for every file
  • Optional form-field flattening to stop fields with the same name clashing
  • Pages copied unchanged, with no re-compression
  • Password-protected files can be added by typing their password

Merging PDFs without uploading: what happens to your files

The files are read into this tab and joined by code running on your own computer or phone, so nothing is sent to a server. Pages are copied into a new PDF exactly as they are: page sizes, orientation, text and image quality are untouched, and nothing is re-compressed.

  • Forms: two files can contain fields with the same name, which would make them fill in together. When any file has form fields, Flatten form fields is ticked to fix the current values onto the page. Untick it to keep fields editable.
  • Bookmarks and accessibility tags from the original files are not carried over.
  • Password-protected PDFs ask for their password when you add them; the merged file is saved without it. To remove a password from a single file, use Unlock PDF.
Worked example

Building a job application pack

You have cover-letter.pdf (1 page), cv.pdf (2 pages) and certificates.pdf (3 pages), and the portal accepts one file. Drop all three at once. They appear in the order your device picked them, so drag the cover letter to the top and the certificates to the bottom. The summary bar shows 3 files and 6 pages. The output is named cover-letter-merged.pdf after the first file you added; change it to Jane-Smith-application in the File name box, press Merge PDF and the 6-page file downloads straight away.

Good to know

  • Name files with a number prefix (01-, 02-, 03-) and use Sort A–Z to put dozens of files in order in one click.
  • Merging never shrinks a file: the result is roughly the sum of the inputs. Run it through Compress PDF if a portal has a size cap.
  • Need to drop or reorder individual pages after merging? Open the result in Organize pages.
  • Very large batches (hundreds of megabytes) depend on your device’s memory. We show a warning if the total looks heavy; merging in smaller batches always works.

Merge PDF: frequently asked questions

How many PDFs can I merge at once?

There is no fixed cap on files or pages. The only limit is your device’s memory, and dozens of ordinary documents are no problem. We warn you if the total gets very large.

Will merging reduce the quality?

No. Pages are copied as they are, so text stays sharp and images keep their original resolution. If you want a smaller file afterwards, use Compress PDF.

Can I merge PDFs on my phone?

Yes. Tap Choose PDF files to pick from your Files app, reorder with the arrow buttons, then tap Merge PDF. Everything runs in the phone’s browser.

Why were my form fields flattened?

If two files both have a field called, say, “Name”, a merged file would link them so typing in one changes the other. Flattening fixes the current values onto the page to avoid that. Untick the option if you still need to fill the fields in.

Are bookmarks and links kept?

Bookmarks (the outline panel) from the original files are not carried over. The pages themselves, including their text and images, are copied unchanged.

Does the merged PDF have a watermark?

Never. No watermark, no branding and nothing extra is added to your document.
