How to remove a password from a PDF

Banks, payroll systems and utility companies often send statements as password-protected PDFs. That’s sensible in transit, but tiresome when you’re filing them, merging them into a bundle or uploading them to a portal that can’t accept encrypted files. Enter the password you already have once, and save a copy that opens without it. It also removes printing and copying restrictions from files you own that aren’t password-locked.

  1. 1

    Open your PDF

We check how the file is protected and show what’s allowed or blocked.

  2. 2

    Enter the password

The one you already use to open it, or confirm you have the right to change it.

  3. 3

    Download

Save an unlocked copy and store it carefully.

Unlock PDF features

  • Remove an open password you already know
  • Remove printing and copying restrictions from files you own
  • See which actions a restricted file blocks
  • Caps Lock warning, and retry as often as you need
  • No password guessing or cracking, ever

How unlocking works, and why the password is required

Decryption happens in this browser tab with the qpdf library; your file and the password you type never leave your device.

There are two kinds of PDF protection. An open password encrypts the content, and Unlock needs that exact password to decrypt it. A permissions password only restricts actions such as printing or copying; files with only restrictions can be unlocked if you confirm you own the file or have permission to change it.

PDFMagpie only works with the correct password. There’s no guessing, cracking or “recovery” feature, and there never will be. Only unlock files you own or have permission to change.

Worked example

Filing a year of bank statements

Your bank sends monthly statements locked with your date of birth as the password. Open the first statement: the tool shows “Password required”. Type the password and save statement-jan-unlocked.pdf. Repeat for the other months, then combine them with Merge PDF into one file for your accountant. If you’re sending that file onwards, consider adding a new password with Protect PDF.

Good to know

  • If a file says “This PDF isn’t locked”, there’s nothing to remove; you can use it with any tool directly.
  • Typed the password and it was rejected? Check Caps Lock; the field warns you when it’s on. You can retry as often as you like.
  • An unlocked copy can be opened by anyone who gets hold of it, so store it as carefully as the original.
  • Unlocked files are often good candidates for Compress PDF before uploading.

Unlock PDF: frequently asked questions

Can you crack a password I don’t know?

No. Unlock only works with the correct password. We don’t offer password guessing or recovery.

My PDF opens but won’t let me print or copy. Can I fix that?

That file has restrictions but no open password. If you own it or have permission to change it, confirm that and Unlock will remove the restrictions.

What’s the difference between an open password and a permissions password?

An open (user) password is needed to view the file at all. A permissions (owner) password only controls actions such as printing, copying and editing.

Is it legal to unlock a PDF?

Removing a password from your own document, or one you have permission to change, is normal. Don’t unlock files you don’t have rights to; that may breach the owner’s rights or your agreements.

Does unlocking change the content?

No. The pages, text and images are kept as they are; only the encryption and restrictions are removed.
